USRRC – Day 2 The Beaver Cleaver (November Mourn)
Nov
2008
Feeling good about MRDs and traps after Day 1, Day 2 promised more of the same, but it introduced time and speed back into the mix. Our goal was simple, don’t max one leg. We’d be happy with that result.
We recognized a trap in St. Paul (Mission St vs Mission Ave one block apart) from a previous rally. But local knowledge didn’t help. In fact, we were still patting ourselves on the back for getting it right that, we missed activating the next MRDs at the right time, we went off course, missed the first control and wound up at the second control. That misadventure cost us 200 points. From that point on, we got some traps right, others we fell into.
Our favorite trap:
96 Left on Central Point. Take 10 minutes to travel from NRI 97 to 99. May overlap.
97 Right on Bremer
98 Left on Territorial CAST 30 <===There’s a trap in here somewhere
99 Right on Locust CAST 25
100 Right on Holly (MR /0.00)
So noted the time at the turn on Bremer. 10 minutes later and we should be at Locust right? We came up to the light at Territorial and 99W, holding instruction 99. What do we do? Train! So we sat and waited. Wait! “It’s not instruction 99, it’s 99 the highway!”, says the driver. Sure enough a checkpoint was waiting around the corner. We got it right!
In the end we finished 14th overall. But we understand variable MRDs and a whole list of things better. An added bonus, now we really understand the difference between “STOP”, STOP and a STOP with “RIGHT TURN PERMITTED WITHOUT STOPPING”.
We did far better than we’d hoped. Although we maxed 6 of 21 controls, we zeroed 2 legs and got 2 on 2 legs, 3 on 2 legs and 4 on another. We were very happy with the results.

I wish there was a train going by when we reached that intersection of 99! I might have actually caught the trap….the whole way through that transit…we kept reciting “Where’s the trap on this leg?! Something’s not right, where’s the trap?” Then promptly rolled onto the Canby Ferry with a max score.
Nice job!
